The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James T. Mitchell (ASN: RA-16311534), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Torgon-ni, Korea, Sergeant Mitchell, whose squad was the lead squad of the advance elements, came under intense small arms fire which came from the left front of the column. Immediately he called for artillery fire and held his squad in the advanced position until the fire had lifted. Then, without regard for his own personal safety and directly exposed to enemy fire, he moved his squad to a saddle on the right of the enemy position. During this action four members of his squad were wounded, but unhesitatingly he led his squad in a flanking assault upon the enemy. Sergeant Mitchell succeeded in routing the enemy and inflicting heavy casualties. The heroism and initiative of Sergeant Mitchell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
