The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) George R. Mitchell (ASN: 0-1290982), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 December 1950, Major Mitchell led a reconnaissance force north from Majon-dong, Korea, with the mission of contacting a marine unit, and to assist it in breaking through the enemy lines to reach the Hungnam Beachhead. As Major Mitchell’s patrol neared Sudong he was warned by civilians that enemy troops were present in the immediate area. Shortly thereafter Major Mitchell’s patrol was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. To make a complete estimate of the situation Major Mitchell, standing in his jeep for greater visibility, traveled the area under heavy automatic and small arms fire. After his reconnaissance Major Mitchell decided to push on through and bring much needed help to the marine unit. By sheer bravery the patrol ran the gauntlet of heavy fire and broke through the enemy positions. Major Mitchell’s calm and decisive manner, aggressive spirit, and bravery under fire inspired the members of his small force; his initiative, courage, and aggressive leadership are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
