The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Donald Kenneth Mitchell (ASN: RA-15417787), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. The left flank of Company G, under heavy enemy attack, was overrun and the unit was forced to withdraw. Corporal Mitchell, an automatic rifleman, moved quickly into position on the exposed flank. Under withering fire from the numerically superior enemy, he fearlessly held fast and raked the hostile troops with such an effective base of fire that he forced them to deploy. This heroic action enabled his company to evacuate several wounded soldiers. When Corporal Mitchell exhausted his ammunition, he began to hurl hand grenades at the enemy, holding them at bay until he was struck and killed by enemy fire. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Mitchell reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
