The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Frank J. Middelberg (ASN: 0-453898), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 12 to 24 March 1944. As Intelligence Officer for an infantry regiment, Captain Middelberg demonstrated ingenuity and courage in collecting important information which was of inestimable value to his commander and contributed materially to the success of the regiment’s mission. His painstaking thoroughness and devotion to duty often carried him on hazardous reconnaissance missions. Frequently, he entered into the fire fight to collect his data. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Middelberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
