The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William Sun (ASN: 35229769), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Torfhaus, Germany, on 14 April 1945. When assault platoons were impeded by intense cannon, machine gun, and small arms concentrations from strong enemy infantry elements supported by tanks, Private Sun, realizing that radio communications were disrupted, courageously moved across perilous terrain and reconnoitered the foe’s positions. He then returned across the impact area and delivered vital information to units of his organization, thereby facilitating the seizure of an important objective. Private Sun’s gallant actions and outstanding initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
