The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Warren E. Milligan (ASN: RA-36747285), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 May 1951 in the vicinity of Wadungi, Korea. During an assault upon enemy positions, Sergeant Milligan, a squad leader, was painfully wounded by an enemy round. With complete disregard for his wound, Sergeant Milligan continued to lead his squad in the attack and succeeded in driving a numerically superior enemy force from his position. After securing the position, Sergeant Milligan directed his squad in setting up a defensive perimeter. When the enemy launched a counter-attack, Sergeant Milligan completely exposed himself to enemy fire and led his squad in the attack. Inspired by his actions, the squad successfully repulsed the enemy attack. It was not until the position was fully secured that Sergeant Milligan permitted himself to be evacuated. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Milligan reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Warren E. Milligan (ASN: RA-36747285), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, during an assault upon enemy positions, a platoon leader was seriously wounded and evacuated. Sergeant Milligan, a member of an adjoining platoon, unhesitatingly assumed command and reorganized the unit. Disregarding the intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire, he led his men in the assault, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Through his dauntless courage and leadership ability, Sergeant Milligan’s unit was able to overrun enemy positions and successfully accomplish its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Milligan on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
