The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William M. Miller (ASN: 0-1872978), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 November 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Miller, a Platoon Leader, led an assault group up Hill 200, but was temporarily halted by intense enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire. Regrouping his men, he led a second assault up the hill. During this action he saw one of his men in danger from an enemy soldier firing from a concealed position. With complete disregard for personal safety he fearlessly leaped into the enemy’s communications trench and killed the enemy soldier, thereby saving the life of one of his men but was wounded in return by enemy grenades. Although in great pain, he reorganized the patrol and gave the order to withdraw. Because of his quick thinking and courageous leadership, the patrol was able to withdraw successfully with a minimum of casualties, thus saving many lives. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Miller reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
