Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 812 (December 4, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] William C. Miller (ASN: US-55055819), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On that date the platoon of which Corporal Miller was a member had infiltrated the enemy lines and was immediately encircled and attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Although at times his position was in the verge of being overrun, Corporal Miller remained with his machine gun and continued firing upon the enemy. Despite the intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire directed at him, Corporal Miller employed an accurate and effective base of fire on the onrushing hostile forces, inflicting numerous casualties upon them. During this action when his weapon failed to function, he immediately stood in full view of the enemy and commenced firing his .45 caliber pistol and threw hand grenades while the machine gun was being repaired. As a result of his dauntless courage and selfless devotion to duty, the hostile attack was repulsed. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Miller on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
