The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Robert L. Miller (ASN: RA-45028853), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1951, as Company E was occupying defensive positions near Kowang-ni, Korea, it was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. During the attack, Sergeant Miller, who was acting assistant platoon sergeant, observed a machine gun crew that had been wounded. Realizing the need for maximum fire power, he courageously left his position and made his way through the embattled area to the position of the wounded men, administered first aid and then commenced firing the weapon with a continuous and effective hail of fire. Upon the order to withdraw, he unhesitatingly assisted the medical aid men in the evacuation of the wounded. Sergeant Miller’s gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
