Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 14 (January 10, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Kike A. Miller, Jr. (ASN: US-55028523), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On that date the platoon of which Private Miller was a member had infiltrated the enemy lines and was immediately surrounded and attacked by a numerically superior hostile force. During the ensuing defense against the fanatical enemy onslaught, Private Miller heard a comrade call for an aidman. Aware that the medical aidman was not available, he immediately advanced through the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, mortar and grenade fire to the side of the wounded man. While carrying his comrade to safety, Private Miller noticed that the enemy was about the break through the gap left by the vacant position. Unhesitatingly, he returned to the wounded man’s vacated position and engaged the assaulting hostile force in hand to hand combat. During this engagement he was fatally wounded but his intrepid actions and the great number of casualties he inflicted upon the hostile forces discouraged and forced them to withdraw. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty and comrades displayed by Private Miller reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
