The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Master Sergeant John Andrew Miller (ASN: RA-6384327), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. Sergeant Miller was commanding a section of a tank platoon which was under heavy enemy attack. Under heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire, the supported infantry was forced to withdraw. In order to protect the withdrawal, Sergeant Miller refused to pull back although the enemy had penetrated around his tanks. With steady bursts of machine gun fire, his men inflicted heavy losses upon the enemy, screening the infantry’s withdrawal to new defensive positions. Only after his tank was hit by several charges did he give the order to withdraw. While moving back, his tank was struck again and Sergeant Miller was killed instantly. His heroic delaying action and his inspiring leadership prevented the enemy from penetrating the right flank of a heavily engaged rifle battalion. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Miller reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
