The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clifford E. Brown (ASN: 3486042), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 110th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 23 October 1918. Private Brown voluntarily went into a sector that was under an intense barrage of enemy artillery, machine, and gas-shell fire and assisted in bringing a wounded comrade to the first aid station.
