The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald O. Miller (ASN: 0-217734), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, [then Acting Commanding Officer, Company F], 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 March 1951, in the vicinity of Kyechon-ni, Korea. Company F had the mission of attacking and securing Hill 778. As the unit was moving forward, the platoon leader of the leading platoon was seriously wounded by intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire. Lieutenant Miller immediately moved forward through the enemy fire to reorganize the platoon. Then leading the company in its attack, he remained in an exposed position to direct accurate and effective artillery and mortar fire on the enemy positions. So effective was the fire thus directed that the company overran the enemy positions and killed many enemy soldiers. Lieutenant Miller aided in the evacuation of the wounded and moved from position to position to encourage his men. The gallant conduct and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Miller reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
