The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Claud R. Miller (ASN: 0-346957), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 31 January 1943. When the company bivouac area was severely harassed by enemy machine gun and sniper fire resulting in several casualties, Captain Miller took personal command of a platoon and aggressively led his men in a successful action against the enemy. While he effectively silenced the major portion of the enemy’s fire, sporadic sniper fire continued throughout the day, and later, while going from foxhole to foxhole to advise and encourage his men, Captain Miller was killed by sniper fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
