The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Billy J. Miller (ASN: ER-14217465), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 April 1951, while moving against enemy positions, near Hant’an, Korea, the advance of Private Miller’s platoon was blocked by a well-entrenched carefully concealed enemy machine gun nest. When the platoon sergeant asked for volunteers to move out and destroy the weapon, Private Miller immediately volunteered. As another member of the squad covered the advance, Private Miller, advanced toward the emplacement despite the severe enemy machine gun fire sweeping the area. After maneuvering himself into position, Private Miller fixed his bayonet and charged the enemy. His movements were so aggressive that the enemy machine gun and its entire crew were captured intact, allowing the rest of the platoon to continue its mission. Private Miller’s gallantry and intrepid reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
