The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Richard L. Mileham (ASN: 0-226231), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 May 1951, as the 3d Battalion launched an attack against Hill 492 in the vicinity of Wadunji, Korea, it was immediately subjected to a heavy concentration of enemy small arms fire which inflicted heavy casualties on the friendly forces. Lieutenant Mileham, realizing that the aidmen could not handle the increasing number of casualties, immediately secured all the medical supplies he could carry and dashed across approximately 200 yards of exposed terrain through a hail of enemy fire to a position where five wounded men were lying in full view of the enemy. Heedless of the intense small arms fire, he calmly administered first aid and then supervised the evacuation of the more seriously wounded. His timely actions did much to alleviate pain and suffering and undoubtedly saved the lives of several of the wounded men. Lieutenant Mileham’s gallantry, courage, and professional skill reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
