Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 369 (October 9, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Joseph Christos Mikronis (ASN: RA-12342045), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 August 1952 in the vicinity of Sangpobang, North Korea. On that date, Corporal Mikronis was serving with a rifle platoon which was in bitter combat with a determined hostile force. The friendly unit was defending a vital position on “Old Baldy”, but had lost contact with the supporting unit on their right. Corporal Mikronis, without thought of personal safety, volunteered to cross the fire swept terrain to make contact with the friendly unit. Advancing part way, he was pinned down by intense enemy grenade, automatic weapons and small arms fire. From this position, he signaled for and directed friendly fire upon the enemy’s emplacements, while charging them in a one man assault, throwing grenades and firing his rifle. In this valiant charge, Corporal Mikronis killed seven enemy soldiers before falling mortally wounded. In neutralizing the enemy emplacements long enough for the friendly unit to launch an attack, he undoubtedly saved many of his comrades’ lives. The complete devotion to duty and intrepidity displayed by Corporal Mikronis reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
