The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Junior Everette Michael (ASN: US-52044010), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On that date, during the attack upon a strategic enemy-held hill, Company A was halted by a heavy concentration of hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. Realizing that a frontal assault was futile, a platoon was detached to attempt a flanking movement. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Michael, a member of the platoon, fearlessly assaulted the hostile positions. He succeeded in destroying many enemy bunkers with hand grenades and inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. Private Michael was within several feet of the final objective when he was fatally wounded by the hostile fire. Through his inspired leadership and self-sacrificing spirit his unit was able to secure its objective successfully. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Michael reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
