The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Sergeant Alfred B. Hilton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1864, while serving with Company H, 4th U.S. Colored Infantry, in action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia. When the regimental Color Bearer fell, Sergeant Hilton seized the Color and carried it forward, together with the national standard, until disabled at the enemy’s inner line.
