The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William T. Meredith (ASN: RA-15270071), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950, in the vicinity of Cebreli, Korea. A large enemy force attacked an observation post which Corporal Meredith’s squad was operating on the right flank of the regiment. Intense fire was placed on his position and friendly units on the left flank were forced to withdraw. When the enemy attacked his position, he manned a .50 caliber machine gun and brought heavy fire upon them, delaying their assault and permitting the squad to send vital information to the Regimental Commander. Corporal Meredith continued to inflict heavy casualties on the enemy and provided covering fire for the withdrawal of left flank elements. When his own position was threatened by enemy infantry, he faithfully remained at his post until it became necessary for him to engage the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. He inflicted severe losses on the enemy troops who were assaulting his position and delayed them long enough for his squad to withdraw from complete encirclement and annihilation. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Meredith reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
