The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert W. Mercy (ASN: RA-12294624), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Uijombu, Korea, on 3 January 1951. Sergeant Mercy’s squad was occupying a position on the left flank of the company when the numerically superior enemy launched a strong attack. The squad soon came under heavy automatic weapons fire from positions where the enemy was attempting to build a firing line. Realizing the grave threat that his action posed, he determined to eliminate this source of the enemy’s strength. Completely unmindful of personal safety he left his position and armed with grenades crossed approximately 75 yards of open ground, in the face of intense fire, to a position near the enemy machine gun. Courageously exposing himself to the full fury of the enemy’s fire he hurled grenades into the position, destroying the gun and crew and breaking the enemy attempt to flank his company’s position. Sergeant Mercy’s courageous actions and complete devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Infantry.
