The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles B. Melton (ASN: RA-22994729), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that date he was a member of a machine gun crew in an infantry company which was participating in a patrolling action. The patrol was brought under sudden enemy attack and forced to withdraw. Realizing that the enemy might try to encircle his unit, Corporal Melton, with complete disregard for his own safety, volunteered to remain to the rear to cover a retrograde movement. His accurate fire undoubtedly inflicted enemy casualties. Though seriously wounded, he remained in position, allowing his unit to return to defensive positions with a minimum of casualties. The gallant conduct displayed by Corporal Melton on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
