The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class James W. Medley (ASN: RA-34505822), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sojon-ni, Korea, on 6 February 1951. He was leading his squad in an attack against Hill 261 held by a numerically superior enemy force. As he led the advance he placed accurate rifle fire on the enemy while at the same time directing the fire of his squad upon the enemy defensive positions. Due to heavy counterfire from the enemy, he, moving with utter disregard for his own safety, was wounded slightly in the arm, but refusing to turn back, continued to pour deadly fire upon the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties. Unaware of a fanatic enemy sniper on his left he was wounded once again in the leg. Displaying outstanding devotion to duty which served as an inspiration to his squad members, he refused to turn back for medical aid but continued to lead them on. As the final assault began he was wounded seriously a third time. With multiple wounds and weak from loss of blood, he still courageously refused to give up and led the squad on and successfully drove the enemy from the position. Sergeant Medley’s courageously actions, exemplary combat leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on himself and the united States Infantry.
