Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 215 (June 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Charles E. McSwain (ASN: RA-13295732), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 November 1950, in the vicinity of Todong-ni, Korea. Corporal McSwain volunteered to bring hot food to his company which was engaged in combat against the enemy. As he neared the area he was brought under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Halting his vehicle, Corporal McSwain observed several wounded men. Without regard for his own safety, he immediately left a covered position and carried the wounded to a place of safety. Later Corporal McSwain answered a call for volunteers to carry ammunition. Carrying the ammunition through enemy fire, he remained with the dug-in troops and joined them in returning the enemy fire with great determination. The gallantry demonstrated by Corporal McSwain reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
