The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Carl E. McPherson (ASN: RA-16321961), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Won-ni, Korea. On that date the rifle platoon to which he was attached as Medical Aid Man was overrun and surrounded by numerically superior enemy forces. Displaying complete indifference for his personal safety he advanced into terrain which was controlled by the enemy and began to administer medical treatment to the many casualties which the platoon had sustained. While performing this task he was attacked by an enemy soldier whom he killed and in spite of the constant threat of the presence of the enemy he remained in his dangerous position, continuing to render first aid to the wounded. As a result of his courageous action, eight seriously wounded soldiers were given medical aid and were later successfully evacuated to safety. The gallantry and devotion to his fallen comrades displayed on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service. occasion by Sergeant McPherson reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
