Headquarters, 1st Air Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 8590 (July 17, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Joseph H. McPeek (ASN: US-55906923), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class McPeek distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 April 1968, while serving as a combat construction specialist with Company C, 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during a combat mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, Specialist McPeek exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved to a forward fighting position to administer first aid and assist in evacuating a wounded comrade. Disregarding his own safety, Specialist McPeek placed accurate suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Specialist McPeek’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
