    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Medical Corps) Joel N. McNair (ASN: 0-52075), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Medical Battalion, [then Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment], 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date the battalion aid station was being heavily shelled by enemy artillery and mortar fire, inflicting numerous friendly casualties. Major McNair, regimental surgeon, completely disregarding the intense enemy fire, rendered medical aid to the wounded men. After treating each casualty, Major McNair directed an efficient evacuation of the wounded to positions of safety. Then, Taking the initiative, he led litter squads through an enemy mine field in order to evacuate the men without delay. Major McNair’s surgical skill and undaunted courage were responsible for saving the lives of numerous casualties. The gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty demonstrated by Major McNair on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

McNair (ASN: 0-52075), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from July 1955 to June 1964. [This award supersedes the award of the Army Commendation Medal to Colonel McNair for meritorious service during the period 31 July 1958 to 19 June 1962 as announced in General Orders Number 20, Headquarters, United States Army Tripler General Hospital, dated 19 June 1962.]
