The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Frank M. Brimer (ASN: 2262207), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 348th Machine-Gun Battalion, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Eclisfontaine, France, 27 and 30 September 1918. First Sergeant Brimer exemplified in the highest degree the spirit of bravery, devotion to duty and self-sacrifice. Though he had been badly gassed during the action of 27 September he maintained liaison between his company and the battalion post of command, at one time carrying an important message from the front to the artillery. On 29 September though still suffering from the effects of gas, he refused to leave his company, and on a cold, rainy night brought up fresh ammunition over a rough unfamiliar road in the dark through heavy shell fire. He took part in the action on Tronsal Farm Hill 30 September assisting in the direction and control of fire of the machine guns of his company. In the evening of 30 September he was killed while taking a wounded soldier to the rear.
