The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Francis P. McManus (ASN: US-53032630), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, (then attached to Company C), 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Sergeant McManus was a forward observer with a unit which was laying down a heavy concentration of small arms fire in order to discourage an enemy counterattack. Despite the fact, the hostile force launched a savage attack. In the ensuing fire fight, Sergeant McManus observed that an automatic rifleman, protecting the enemy’s main avenue of approach, was wounded by the hostile fire. Realizing that the whole defense perimeter might well collapse if the onrushing foe was not stopped at this point, Sergeant McManus crossed the fire-swept area to the abandoned weapon and employed a devastating fire upon the enemy. He continued in this manner, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy forces and prevented them from overrunning his position. His initiative and courageous action were directly responsible for his unit being able to maintain its position. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant McManus on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
