The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward J. McLaughlin (ASN: US-56091470), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 12 June 1953, in the vicinity of Miro Tong, Korea, elements of Heavy Mortar Company were firing in support of forward Infantry units when the enemy commenced to direct mortar and artillery concentrations on the company positions. One incoming round exploded near a gun pit in which Private McLaughlin was storing ammunition. Fragments from the shell seriously burned him and set fire to a box of charges. With complete disregard for his own welfare, he immediately picked up the burning box of explosives and courageously ran with it from the gun emplacement and the men working there. Despite his serious wounds, Private McLaughlin refused to place the flaming ammunition down until it was a safe distance from his comrades. As a result of his valiant actions, he saved the lives of many United Nations personnel. Private McLaughlin’s outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
