Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Andrew J. McKinley (ASN: RA-37333247), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, 89th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 27 November 1950, near Ipsok, Korea, Sergeant McKinley, after driving his litter keep with two wounded soldiers through an enemy road block, was halted by friendly troops who were heavily engaged with a second hostile blocking force. After placing his patients in a safe position, he moved throughout the area, despite intense small arms and mortar fire, to administer aid to the other wounded. When a light tank convoy was formed to run the roadblock, he loaded his jeep with the critically injured and resolutely advanced through the heavy hostile barrage until he was mortally wounded. Sergeant McKinley’s valorous actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Medical Service.
