The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Bernard A. McKenna (ASN: RA-17331191), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imok-Chong, Korea. On this date, during an attack on heavily fortified enemy positions, Private McKenna was the lead scout of his platoon. He continuously exposed himself to the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, in order to better observe the hostile positions. As the platoon ascended a steep slope, Private McKenna was hit by fragmentation from an enemy grenade, rolling him down the hill. Picking himself up with fierce determination, he flanked the hostile emplacements and assaulted them with hand grenades. He succeeded in destroying several bunkers while inflicting numerous enemy casualties and continued in this manner until he was joined by his comrades. Through his heroic and selfless actions, the platoon was able to secure the objective without further friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private McKenna on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
