Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 82 (September 2, 1950)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Vincent T. McKelvey (ASN: 0-2012038), United States Army, for gallantry in action while a member of Company H, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Hwanggan, Korea, on 26 July 1950. Lieutenant McKelvey’s unit had been ordered to withdraw in the face of an attack by numerically superior enemy forces. As Lieutenant McKelvey’s unit withdrew, they were ordered to destroy all avenues of withdrawal behind them which left a route through a mine field as the only entrance into our lines. During the withdrawal, Lieutenant McKelvey came upon a wounded man from another unit. Although under small arms fire, Lieutenant McKelvey disregarded personal safety, picked up the wounded man and carried him on his back a thousand yards through the mine field to safety. Lieutenant McKelvey’s gallant action saved the life of a wounded comrade and reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
