The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class John J. McKeage, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, in rescuing an officer from drowning at Camp Nanakuli, Territory of Hawaii, on the night of 3 August 1941. Hearing cries for help from the sea, Private First Class McKeage, with utter disregard of his personal safety, plunged into the waters and swam to the assistance of the struggling man. Despite the darkness of the night and the swift current, Private First Class McKeage, with the assistance of another soldier, succeeded in bringing the man in distress to the shore. The heroism displayed by Private First Class McKeage on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
