The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Niles J. McIntyre (ASN: 0-1011371), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On this date an enemy attack penetrated the lines of an infantry regiment and threatened to overrun the Regimental Command Post guarded by Captain McIntyre’s security force. The enemy succeeded in placing this force under heavy grenade, rifle, and sub-machine gun fire, and had penetrated to about 50 yards from the Command Post. When the security force was practically neutralized by the enemy fire, Captain McIntyre, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his cover, moved through the heavy enemy fire to his men, reorganized them and directed their fire on the enemy. The result was highly effective and the enemy was forced to withdraw to the cover of a small village. When the security force was ordered to retire, Captain McIntyre continued to expose himself to the heavy enemy fire, by moving among his men, personally directing and encouraging them. Twice during the withdrawal he returned to the evacuated position to search for wounded. He carried one wounded through the enemy fire to safety and bandaged another badly wounded while under direct sniper fire. His selfless concern for the well being of his men and his courageous indifference to enemy fire were an inspiration to all observing his valorous conduct. The gallant action displayed by Captain McIntyre on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
