The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David J. Brickley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, October 23 – 24, 1918. Stubbornly resisting three strong enemy counterattacks, Lieutenant Brickley, without aid, went forward and by effective machine-gun fire drove the enemy from and captured a strong pill box which had been raising havoc in our ranks.
