The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] John T. McGuire (ASN: RA-11169734), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, in the vicinity of Amdoltong, Korea. Company I was attacking a strongly defended hill and was receiving heavy fire. Private McGuire was assisting with the wounded when he heard a cry for help. He immediately started to crawl toward the direction of the cry despite the intense enemy fire falling on the forward slope of the hill where he was moving. Making his way to a culvert where a seriously wounded soldier was lying, he administered first aid and then struggled back up the hill dragging the wounded man through the intense enemy fire until he had reached a place of safety. The gallantry displayed by Private McGuire reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
