Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 541 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Donald Charles McGraw, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Tangwon-ni, Korea, on 7 – 8 September 1951. When the enemy launched its fierce assault under a covering artillery barrage, Major McGraw continually exposed himself to withering automatic weapons, mortar, and grenade fire to direct the defensive maneuvers and encourage his men to repulse the enemy attacks and retain the commanding position. After sending out a patrol to recover the dead and wounded, he attempted to regain friendly lines, although nearly encircled by the infiltrating enemy. Leading the men through hostile blocks and ambushes, he was successful in contacting friendly elements with minimum casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major McGraw, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
