The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Carl M. McIntyre (ASN: 0-420127), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 to 20 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On those dates, during the assault on Hill 266, “Old Baldy”, the enemy poured a continuous hail of mortar, artillery, small arms and automatic weapons fire upon Major McIntyre and his men, inflicting many casualties. Moving through the fire swept terrain and shouting words of encouragement, he succeeded in regrouping his unit and leading them on to their positions. On numerous occasions Major McIntyre, without thought for personal safety, led parties carrying ammunition and supplies to reinforce the fighting units and supervised the party in the evacuation of the wounded. His attention to the existing tactical situation and his great interest in the successful completion of the mission played a major part in the success of the operation. The outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Major McIntyre reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
