The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Paul J. McGee (ASN: 0-967870), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 and 14 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. On that date he was Platoon Leader in Company G, whose positions were subjected to repeated attacks by an overwhelming and fanatical enemy force, causing numerous friendly casualties and opening several gaps in the defense line. When reinforcements consisting of two squads from a nearby unit arrived, Lieutenant McGee immediately led them to forward positions in an attempt to close the gaps. While under constant heavy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire, he moved among his men encouraging them. He personally killed two enemy in hand-to-hand combat. His display of courage inspired his men to greater efforts enabling them to repulse the attack and inflict great losses upon the enemy. When medical aidmen were temporarily unavailable he moved about among the wounded and administered first aid, thereby saving the lives of several of his comrades. The gallant conduct displayed by Lieutenant McGee on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
