The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Walter H. McFarland (ASN: 6148154), United States Army, for gallantry in action on Corregidor, Philippine Islands on 5 and 6 May 1942. Assigned to Battery H, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), Private McFarland rescued a wounded comrade in the area on Corregidor where the enemy were landing in force, and transported him in an open vehicle to a hospital. Returning to the scene of action, he gallantly manned a machine gun for seven hours on Corregidor, denying the enemy the opportunity to cross the South Shore Road and advance to the vital Malinta Tunnel. On the following morning he voluntarily made his way back to an installation where he procured ammunition and additional gun mounts, and moving to a position on Navy Tunnel Ridge, resumed his devastating fire against the enemy until he was wounded and had to be evacuated. Voluntarily risking his life to stem the overwhelming enemy attack, Private McFarland set a conspicuous example of bravery and exemplified the highest traditions of the military service.
