    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carroll McFalls, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 17 February 1944. Lieutenant McFalls, ignoring enemy mortar, nebelwerfer and artillery fire which fell as close as 10 yards from him, directed the fire of his Infantry mortar platoon for two hours. Observing and directing the fire from an exposed observation post only 50 yards in front of his guns, he controlled the placing of 800 rounds on the enemy, inflicting many casualties and aiding materially in repulsing a strong counterattack.108754
