The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Robert E. Jones (ASN: RA-34041772), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 22 August 1950, when his company was attacking Bald Hill near Heman, Korea, Master Sergeant Jones observed that a large hostile force was maneuvering to cut off the company’s left flank. Despite the intense enemy small arms, machine gun, and mortar fire directed at the position, Master Sergeant Jones moved forward to notify his commander of the impending peril. He later became separated from his company but courageously continued on up the hill, and although painfully wounded, remained to observe the enemy until he withdrew at daylight to report eh enemy dispositions to his commander. Master Sergeant Jones’ initiative and courageous devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
