The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Robert E. McDaniel (ASN:), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, Sergeant McDaniel was the platoon sergeant of an engineer platoon having the mission to provide engineer support for a tank company attacking the enemy at Habae-jae, Korea. Sergeant McDaniel moved in front of the task force, and while under enemy observation and fire, personally supervised and assisted in the removal of 25 anti-personnel and 4 anti-tank mines. When casualties occurred within the platoon, he assisted in evacuating them to safety. Although near exhaustion brought about by the intense strain imposed by the hazardous nature of his work, Sergeant McDaniel persevered until the task was finished. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant McDaniel reflects high credit upon himself and the military service.
