The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Earl McDaniel (ASN: 0-2212074), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. When the platoon outposts in the vicinity of Chhungam-ni, Korea, were attacked by numerically superior enemy forces during the night of 30 August 1950, Lieutenant McDaniel joined the outposts to supervise the fire fight. Courageously exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, he directed artillery and mortar fire on the position. By his outstanding leadership and initiative, Lieutenant McDaniel inspired his men to route the attackers and retain the unit of the battalion perimeter. His courageous actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
