Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 322 (July 28, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Edward A. McCreary (ASN: 0-2203928), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 May 1951, near Habae-jae, Korea, the Third Platoon, led by Lieutenant McCreary was given the mission of providing engineer support for a tank patrol attempting to secure a vital enemy-held mountain pass. While approaching the objective, the tank-engineer team was subjected to intense automatic weapons fire and pinned down. Although under heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant McCreary courageously moved among his men in order to assure himself that they were taking advantage of maximum cover and concealment. Later on the platoon resumed its move forward but was again forced to take cover from a withering volley of enemy fire. While trying to determine the enemy’s location, Lieutenant McCreary was seriously wounded in the abdomen. Although suffering from shock and in great pain, he insisted on giving his platoon sergeant important instructions before being evacuated. Lieutenant McCreary’s selfless gallantry and inspiring leadership reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
