The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] John H. McCory (ASN: US-54030228), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 – 24 November 1951, near Kowang-San, Korea, while Company F was occupying defensive positions on Hill 355, they were attacked by a numerically superior enemy force employing artillery, mortar, and small-arms fire. During this action Sergeant McCory, a mortar forward observer, realizing the need for accurate fire, fearlessly exposed himself to the devastating barrage as he crossed open terrain to establish an observation post of more advantage. After directing several fire missions he received a head wound from artillery fragments and upon regaining consciousness, refused medical aid and continued his duty under great pain, and at times was forced to use his rifle when the foe moved too close to his position, thus his excellent placement of mortar and rifle fire slowed down and disorganized the enemy. Sergeant McCory’s gallantry and aggressive performance reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
