The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Thomas P. McCormick (ASN: 6904079), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 5 August 1943. Sergeant McCormick was leading a squad in an attack on a strongly-defended position when intense fire pinned his men to the ground. He boldly crawled toward one of the enemy machine gun nests, killed all of the crew, and disabled the weapon with hand grenades. His courageous action stimulated the fighting spirit of his men who proceeded to press the attack with renewed vigor. Sergeant McCormick accounted for one more enemy sniper before he was mortally wounded. His exemplary courage and devotion to duty in accomplishing a difficult mission at the sacrifice of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
