The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. McClellan (ASN: 0-1794970), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 29 November 1943 when, in an attempt to dislodge Japanese from firmly entrenched positions, he fearlessly ventured to a position six yards from the enemy, but was stopped when wounded in the neck. Despite his wound he remained to throw one more grenade before returning and was mortally wounded. Lieutenant McClellan’s aggressiveness and determination to accomplish his mission in the face of enemy fire despite his wounds were in accord with the highest traditions of the military service. His courageous act was an inspiration to the officers and men of his unit. First Lieutenant McClellan’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
