The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Elmer E. McCAuley, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the vicinity of the Solomon Islands in July 1942. Sergeant McCauley volunteered to organize and operate an advance tele-radio observation post and in the performance of duty contracted a tropical disease and pneumonia, necessitating his evacuation. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
